What Is Gwei? Ethereum Gas Units Explained
Gwei is a denomination of ETH commonly used to display Ethereum gas prices. 1 gwei = 0.000000001 ETH, or 10^-9 ETH.
Using gwei makes small per-gas-unit prices easier to read than writing many decimal places in ETH. It is a unit of account, not a separate cryptocurrency or token that users need to buy.
Wei, Gwei and ETH
Ethereum values can be expressed in different denominations of the same underlying asset. Wei is the smallest standard denomination, while gwei is a convenient middle unit used heavily for transaction-fee settings.
| Denomination | Value in ETH | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 1 wei | 10^-18 ETH | Smallest common ETH denomination |
| 1 gwei | 10^-9 ETH | 1,000,000,000 wei |
| 1 ETH | 1 ETH | 1,000,000,000 gwei |
Because gas prices are usually tiny fractions of one ETH per gas unit, gwei is easier to display and compare.
Why Ethereum Gas Prices Are Shown in Gwei
A wallet needs a price per unit of gas to estimate the network fee. Expressing that value directly in ETH would produce small decimal numbers that are harder to scan.
For example, a gas price of 20 gwei is the same as 0.000000020 ETH per gas unit. The gwei form is shorter and easier to compare with another gas price such as 15 gwei or 30 gwei.
Current gas prices should be checked with live data rather than copied from a static article. SwapETH.org keeps that intent on the Ethereum Gas Tracker.
How to Convert Gwei to ETH
The conversion is based on the fact that one gwei equals 10^-9 ETH.
ETH = gwei × 10^-9
Examples:
| Gwei | ETH equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 gwei | 0.000000001 ETH |
| 10 gwei | 0.000000010 ETH |
| 25 gwei | 0.000000025 ETH |
| 100 gwei | 0.000000100 ETH |
These examples convert the denomination only. They do not represent a full transaction fee because a transaction also consumes a number of gas units.
From Gwei to an Ethereum Transaction Fee
To estimate a transaction fee, multiply the gas used by the gas price and convert gwei to ETH. A simple native ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas units.
For a simplified example at gas price G gwei:
21,000 × G × 10^-9 ETH
The gas price and gas units answer different questions: gwei tells you the price per unit, while gas units describe the work performed. See Ethereum Gas Limit vs Gas Price for the full distinction.
Gwei Is a Unit, Not a Separate Token
Search results sometimes mix Ethereum's gwei denomination with unrelated assets or token tickers. For Ethereum transaction fees, gwei simply expresses a fraction of ETH.
You do not need to acquire a separate "GWEI token" to pay Ethereum Mainnet gas. The network fee is paid from the sender's ETH balance, with wallet interfaces commonly displaying the per-gas-unit price in gwei.
Gwei, Gas Price and Gas Units
These terms often appear together, but they should not be treated as synonyms.
| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Gwei | A denomination of ETH |
| Gas price | Price offered or paid per gas unit, often displayed in gwei |
| Gas units | Amount of computation used by a transaction |
| Transaction fee | Gas used × effective gas price |

Check Current Gwei
Static examples explain the unit, but they do not tell you the current Ethereum gas level. Use the live tracker for Low, Standard and Fast gwei plus recent history and a fee calculator.

What is 1 gwei?
One gwei is 0.000000001 ETH, or one billionth of one ETH. It is also equal to one billion wei.
What does gwei stand for?
Gwei is commonly read as "giga-wei." The name reflects that one gwei equals one billion wei.
How do I convert gwei to ETH?
Multiply the gwei amount by 10^-9. For example, 20 gwei equals 0.000000020 ETH.
What does gwei mean in a wallet?
It usually expresses the price per gas unit used for an Ethereum transaction. The total transaction fee also depends on how many gas units the transaction uses.
How many ETH is 1 gwei?
1 gwei equals 0.000000001 ETH.
