Ethereum Wallet Address: Format, Network and Common Mistakes
An Ethereum address is the public destination used to receive native ETH and interact with Ethereum accounts. It is normally displayed as 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, for a total of 42 characters including the prefix.
The address format identifies an EVM-style account destination, but it does not prove which EVM-compatible network a transfer should use. Network selection must be checked separately.
Ethereum Address Format
Ethereum addresses use hexadecimal characters: the digits 0–9 and letters a–f. The standard visible form contains 40 hexadecimal characters after the 0x prefix.
| Property | Ethereum address |
|---|---|
| Underlying size | 20 bytes |
| Visible prefix | 0x |
| Characters after prefix | 40 hexadecimal characters |
| Total displayed length | 42 characters including 0x |
| Common use | Receive ETH, identify accounts and contract destinations |
An address can be displayed in lowercase or with mixed case depending on checksum formatting and the wallet interface.
Public Address vs Wallet Access Credentials
The Ethereum address is designed to be public. It can be shared with someone who needs to send ETH to the account.
Wallet access credentials are different from the public address and should remain private. Receiving ETH requires the public destination address, not the credentials used to control the wallet.
This distinction matters whenever a service asks where to send a payout: the destination field should contain the public Ethereum address.
EOA and Contract Addresses Can Look the Same
Ethereum uses the same general 0x... visual format for externally owned accounts and contract addresses. The appearance of the address alone therefore does not tell you whether the destination is a normal wallet account or a smart contract.
Before sending funds to a contract address, use the instructions of the application or service that owns that contract flow. A valid-looking address is not proof that the contract is intended to receive the asset through a direct transfer.
The Address Does Not Identify the Network by Itself
Ethereum Mainnet and other EVM-compatible networks can use the same 0x... address format. In some wallets, the same account can even display the same address on several EVM chains.
That means these two checks are separate:
- Is the destination address correct?
- Is the selected blockchain network correct?
A correct address used on the wrong network can produce a different asset/network result than the user intended. When native ETH on Ethereum Mainnet is required, confirm Ethereum Mainnet explicitly.
Ethereum Address Checksum and Letter Case
Ethereum addresses can use mixed-case checksum formatting to help software detect some typing errors. A checksum-capable wallet may display uppercase and lowercase letters in a specific pattern.
Lowercase addresses can still be valid representations, so mixed case should not be described as mandatory. The safer practice is to copy the destination directly from the wallet and verify the full pasted address instead of editing its case manually.
How to Copy and Verify an Ethereum Address
Copying from the receiving wallet is safer than typing a 42-character destination manually. After pasting, verify the value before the transaction is broadcast.
A practical check is to:
- confirm the wallet account that generated the address;
- use the wallet's copy function;
- compare the beginning and end of the pasted address;
- review the complete address where the interface allows it;
- confirm Ethereum Mainnet separately from the address itself;
- avoid changing individual characters or letter case manually.
If a destination changes unexpectedly after copying and pasting, stop and obtain the address again from the receiving wallet before continuing.
Ethereum Address vs Other 0x Addresses
An Ethereum-style address can also appear on BNB Smart Chain and other EVM-compatible networks. The shared format is useful for account compatibility, but it can create a false sense that the networks are interchangeable.
For example, an ETH → BNB route can use 0x... addresses on both sides while the source transaction belongs to Ethereum Mainnet and the payout belongs to BNB Smart Chain. The order's network labels decide the route, not the visual similarity of the addresses.
Using an Ethereum Address for Exchange or Swap Payouts
When a service asks for an ETH payout address, check the exact asset and network before submitting the destination. If the intended result is native ETH on Ethereum Mainnet, the receiving wallet must support that network and asset.
On SwapETH.org, ETH means native ETH on Ethereum Mainnet unless the live widget explicitly states otherwise. Commercial pair pages keep the source deposit details separate from the Ethereum payout address.
Do not reuse a source deposit address as the payout destination simply because both fields contain blockchain addresses.
How to Get an ETH Address
An ETH address is created by an Ethereum-compatible wallet or account provider. The general workflow is:
- 1
Create or open an Ethereum account in a wallet or service you intend to use.
- 2
Select Ethereum and open its Receive or Deposit view.
- 3
Confirm Ethereum Mainnet when the interface provides network choices.
- 4
Copy the complete public
0x...address shown for the account.
For the full receiving workflow, see How to Receive ETH in an Ethereum Wallet Safely.
Native ETH, WETH and Address Compatibility
A valid Ethereum address can be used by many Ethereum token contracts as well as native ETH, but the destination address alone does not tell you which asset is being sent.
Native ETH is Ethereum's protocol asset, while WETH is an ERC-20 representation. If the sending service asks you to choose between them, verify the intended asset before the transfer. See Native ETH vs WETH.
Check the Address Before Receiving ETH
Use the complete public address from the intended wallet, confirm Ethereum Mainnet when native ETH is expected and verify the destination before the sender broadcasts the transaction.
Follow the ETH receiving checklistEthereum Wallet Address FAQ
What is my Ethereum wallet address?
It is the public 0x... destination shown by your Ethereum wallet or account for receiving assets. Open the intended Ethereum account and use its Receive or Deposit view to copy the complete address.
What is an ETH address?
An ETH address is an Ethereum account destination normally displayed as 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters. It can identify an externally owned account or a contract address.
Can you provide an Ethereum address example?
A shortened visual example is 0x1234...abcd, but a real transfer must use the complete 42-character address supplied by the receiving wallet or service.
How do I get an ETH address?
Create or open an Ethereum account in a compatible wallet or service, select Ethereum, confirm the intended network and copy the public address shown in the Receive or Deposit section.
Is it safe to give someone my ETH address?
A public Ethereum address is designed to be shared for receiving funds. It does not by itself provide control over the wallet, but wallet access credentials should remain private.
Which wallet address starts with 0x?
Ethereum and many other EVM-compatible networks use 0x... address formats. The prefix alone therefore does not prove that a destination belongs to Ethereum Mainnet.
